Preparing for Your A320 Type Rating: Where to Begin
Starting your Airbus A320 type rating? Learn how to organise your preparation, approach aircraft systems and use question practice to build understanding from the beginning.
Starting your A320 type rating is an exciting step. It can also leave you wondering how to approach the amount of material ahead.
Aircraft systems, limitations, procedures and unfamiliar terminology all compete for your attention. Before trying to learn everything at once, give your preparation a structure.
Here is a practical place to begin.
1. Start with your training provider’s guidance
Before choosing what to study, check the preparation instructions and material provided by your training organisation or airline.
Complete any assigned pre-course work and use the documents they identify for your course. Follow their guidance on what to learn beforehand and what will be introduced during training.
This gives your preparation a clear direction and helps you avoid spending time on material that does not match your course or aircraft configuration.
2. Build a picture of each system
When approaching a new system, begin with its purpose and normal operation.
Ask yourself:
What does this system do?
What are its main components?
How is it controlled and monitored?
How does it interact with other systems?
Once that foundation is clear, work through the details in your course material.
For example, when studying the electrical system, first understand the available power sources and how power is distributed. That framework gives individual details somewhere to fit.
3. Follow the course, one subject at a time
Use your training syllabus to decide the order of your revision.
After studying a subject, check your understanding before moving on. Keep a short list of points you need to clarify, and bring unresolved questions to your instructor.
Avoid judging your progress by how many pages you have read. A more useful question is: Can I explain the main ideas without looking at the page?
4. Use questions to check your understanding
Question practice can help you discover what you have understood and what needs another look.
Start with a manageable set of questions on a subject you have already studied. Read carefully, choose your answer and review the explanation.
When you get something wrong, identify the reason. You may have missed a condition, confused two concepts or misunderstood how the system works.
Return to the relevant training material, then try again later.
A320 Question Bank lets you create tests around selected categories and revisit incorrect answers through Review Mode, helping you connect practice with your ongoing study.
5. Give limitations context
When studying limitations, use the current references specified for your training.
Pay attention to exactly what each value applies to, including any conditions or configuration differences. Remembering a number is only part of the task; you also need to understand when it is relevant.
Use question practice to check your recall, and confirm uncertain details in your approved material.
6. Learn procedures through your course
For flows, callouts and procedures, follow the material and methods provided by your training organisation or operator.
Make sure any additional resources you use match that guidance. If you notice a difference, ask your instructor to clarify it before practising further.
Keep systems revision and procedural practice connected: understanding why an action is required can help make the sequence more meaningful.
7. Make room for revision
Choose study sessions you can complete consistently, with time to revisit earlier subjects.
A useful session might include:
Studying one topic from your course material.
Answering a short set of related questions.
Reviewing incorrect or uncertain answers.
Noting anything that needs clarification.
Returning to an earlier topic for a brief refresh.
As you cover more subjects, introduce mixed tests to check whether you can recall information outside a single category.
8. Treat scores as feedback
An improving score is encouraging, but it should not be your only measure of progress.
You may recognise familiar questions without being able to explain the answer. Equally, an incorrect answer can reveal a useful gap while there is still time to address it.
Look for understanding behind the result. Could you explain your reasoning to an instructor or another trainee?
Take the first step
You do not need to arrive knowing everything. Begin with the preparation your training provider has assigned, build your understanding steadily and ask questions when something is unclear.
A320 Question Bank can support that routine with 1,200+ questions across 15 categories, explanations and tools for focused revision.
